Beginning on April 2, Yale ITS is providing all Yale computers with a new, more powerful version of antivirus software. Yale University Policy requires the use of approved antivirus software on all devices connected to the university network. So, you should plan to upgrade to this new software version as soon as possible in order to help keep your computer and your data safe from viruses and other malicious internet attacks. The information below will help you with this required upgrade.

If you have any questions about the upgrade process, or comments on how Yale ITS can improve its antivirus service, please contact your local support provider or leave a message with the ITS Help Desk at 203-432-9000 or email helpdesk@yale.edu, and someone will respond within 24 hours. We look forward to assisting you.

How do I get the upgrade?

Computers managed by ITS, including Managed Workstations (NOT including managed Apple computers)

If you use a Yale ITS managed computer, the upgrade will be automatically distributed to you over Yale's network with approved, pre-configured settings. Upgrades will begin the week of April 2 and continue for several weeks after. After the upgrade is automatically delivered to your computer, a pop-up window will appear on your screen notifying you of the upgrade and requesting that you take action to complete the upgrade. Before you begin, save your work and close all active applications. The computer will reboot upon completion of the installation and any unsaved work will be lost. Computers not managed by ITS, including Apple computers

For FAS faculty or any other computer not managed by ITS, please visit the ITS Software Library to download the upgraded antivirus software, Symantec Endpoint Protection, as soon as possible after April 2.

How long will the upgrade take?

For most computers, the upgrade should take between 10 and 20 minutes but may take as long as 60 minutes to complete. Your computer hardware and network connection speed will affect the time needed to complete the upgrade.
